It’s Monday, a new start to the week! Let’s get right to today’s blog post: all about botanical prints! Just call us floral obsessed. The question is does floral print/botanical print really ever go out of style? Obviously, some years the fashion trend of floral prints is more heavily focused than other years. But for the most part, it seems to stay with us each year.
For spring / summer 2018, a lot of designers are drawing from the ’60s design which is characterized by dramatic colors and large buds. Along with that, soft floral prints, micro florals, and mixed bouquet are making a debut, SO let’s thank the print trend and designers for that!
Different Types of Botanical Prints
Like we mentioned, florals are not anything new for spring, especially in fashion. This year’s bringing a new take on florals, we like to describe it kinda like your grandma’s wallpaper or couch. Basically, the more bold and retro the better! Don’t be afraid to pick up a pretty bold floral print and have a little fun with it.
Soft Floral:
- Romantic
- Soft floating materials like silk and chiffon
- Deep necklines
- Airy material
- Bright and soft shades
’60s Floral:
- The main difference between this style of floral is the shape, size, and colors used
- Certain flower shapes
- Hues of orange
Micro Floral:
- Petite floral print
- Sweet for spring
- Adds a really feminine touch
- Been shown on sheer and semi clothing
Mixed Bouquet:
- Combination of spring with floral prints
- Mash-up of different floral patterns
Other Botanical Prints:
There are SO many different floral prints out there besides what we just mentioned. If you want to jump on this ever-evolving trend, but don’t want your whole look being just floral go for some options like these:
- Embroidered floral on a pair of denim, see our blog post HERE for styling tips
- A floral hat
- Floral shoes
- A floral bandana
- A simple floral design on your handbag

How To Style Botanical Prints
We have been on a mixed pattern kick for a while now. Check out this post HERE where we talk about how to mix prints. And follow us on Pinterest to see where we get a lot of our inspiration from!
On the note of mixing prints, think of your floral prints as a neutral palette – whether you are wearing a floral top or bottom, don’t be afraid to style it with a different print / pattern or even floral on floral.

When choosing floral on floral pick a smaller pattern on top or bottom
-
Soft Pastel Shades
If choosing a small pastel print be careful of calico print – it may look like you are wearing your pj’s. Small flowers in a liberty print are much better in pastels. When going for larger flowers you can break it up with jeans in a light fabric.
-
Bold, Fruity, and Acid Shades
Hard to look old fashion when wearing these type of flower print. You can mix them with neutrals are to really stand out mix them with bright colors.
-
Rich and Dark Prints
Definitely edgier. Try pairing this with any shades of jeans.
-
Match a color with one of the flowers
-
Stripes on the top or bottom pair great with a floral print
-
Polka dots
If choosing a polka dot look for a larger or smaller dot than the floral prints.
Well girls that’s enough talking about so many botanical prints, are you floral sick yet haha? It’s the perfect print to transition into spring.
I love how you styled this mid skirt! So cute with the white boots and denim 🙂
Thanks so much Suzanne! We have really been loving skirts right now. xoxo!
You’ve got me feeling all the spring vibes in this post! I love floral prints and typically, they’re my go-to during the spring. While I seem to be veering more towards polka dots or gingham this year, I know that floral will be finding its way into my closet in no time, and I think I’ll be mostly reaching for those 60’s styles! Love how you did the pattern mixing in that one outfit! But both are superb!
Stephanie, the 60’s floral print is our favorite too. We are also loving polka dots as well – in fact, our closet is full of polka dots!
The 60s floral is definitely my fave! This two skirts are way cute babe and I never think floral goes out of style 🙂
Cheers,
CJ
