How To Style Spanx Leggings + Review

There’s just something about Spanx leggings that everyone loves about them. If you follow any fashion blogger on Instagram then you probably have seen them rave about their Spanx leggings, especially the faux leather ones. It’s like The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants because everyone on IG looks adorable in them! Last year I jumped on board and bought a pair, but to be honest I rarely wear them…

Why you ask? Every time I reach for them and try to recreate a look I see on Pinterest or Instagram, it just falls short. I’ve come to the conclusion that although I wear leggings almost every day for my (Katie’s) job, I just don’t like how I look when I style them as an outfit. After some trial and error, I’ve come to the conclusion that it just isn’t my style.

All that being said, they are such a great pair of leggings that can be worn for every occasion. When styled correctly, they can 100% be pulled off on any shape and size. I may not be rocking my Spanx leggings how I’d like, but I still do love them and think you will too.

Fabric & Fit

We own the faux leather leggings which are made of spandex, elastane, and polyester. They are very easy to care for – just turn them inside out (to protect the faux leather look), wash on cold, and lay flat to dry.

They are a tight fit and come in regular and petite. For reference, we are wearing the XS in petite. If you have shorter legs, then go for the petite version so you do not have an excess of material at your ankles. Nobody wants elephant looking ankles. The best part is there is no center seam, so you know what that means girls – no camel toe! Can I get an amen to that?

Spanx leggings fit like a dream. They fit true to size, smooth everything out, tuck in your tummy with a high waisted band and make your butt look nice. They truly are heaven in a pair of leggings!

Style

Spanx makes a ton of different leggings:

  • Active– Contoured tummy-taming band, 360 shaping fabric, no center seam = no camel toe.
  • Seamless – Live-in comfort, double-layer shaping waistband, no center seam.
  • Jean-ish – Gut check shaping panel, great stretch, easy pull-on design.
  • Velvet – Wide shaping waistband, comfy velvet, no center seam.
  • Everywear – Thinfused shaping technology, ultra-sleek, hidden shaping, breathable wicking + 4-way stretch
  • And of course, Faux Leather – 4″ shaping waistband, fashion-forward, no center seam.

Each style is going to fit like a legging. With all different fabric options, they truly are super versatile and can be dressed up or down.

Price

Spanx leggings run from $68 – $130 with the average price being $98. Definitely more on the pricier side. That being said, Spanx is very comparable in price to other popular brands such as Lululemon, Beyond Yoga, and Alo Yoga.

When purchasing many clothing items, the old saying “you get what you pay” for does ring true when it comes to the faux leather leggings from Spanx. The faux leather leggings are made of the perfect amount of thickness with just the right amount of texture and sheen.

What To Wear With Spanx Leggings

The options may be endless, but trying to style a specific item can be overwhelming at times. Here are some tips for you take away + ask yourself:

  • Start with keeping the occasion you are dressing for in mind.
  • What top are you looking for? blouse, oversized sweater, t-shirt, button up…
  • Do you want an extra layer? leather jacket, blazer, denim jacket, cardigan, army jacket…
  • What shoes are you going to feel most comfortable in? sneakers, boots, mules, over the knee boots, heels…

Denim jacket, sweatshirt, and sneakers (athleisure wear):

For any of you ladies who want to be comfortable while on the go or for a day at home. Adding a denim jacket will help break up the “athletic” look and give it more of an athleisure look.

  • If it’s warmer where you are, throw on a graphic t-shirt.
  • Sneakers or a pair of UGG boots are two great choices. Yep, I just said UGG boots!

Button-down and booties:

For added warmth, pair with a button-down/flannel. By unbuttoning my flannel and wearing off one shoulder, it instantly transformed my look.

  • Throw on a jacket, layer a sweater over your flannel, tie around your waist or keep your button-down unbuttoned with a t-shirt underneath.
Blouse and heels:

Need a comfortable and chic work outfit? You can easily get away with wearing Spanx leggings as pants when styled correctly.

  • A great option would be a flowy blouse/camisole that goes past your bottom with an unstructured trench coat and heels.

Oversized Sweater:

This time of year all we want to wear are oversized sweaters. I love layering an oversized shirt underneath for added texture and warmth.

  • Pair a cropped jacket over a longer sweater or an oversized coat over your sweater.
  • Try adding a chunky knit scarf and/or a pair of taller socks to peek out from your boots.

Faux fur coat and over the knee boots:

Faux fur coats/wool coats do the perfect job at giving your outfit a dressed up look. This faux fur cape has been one of my favorites this season, you can see how I styled it a different way here.

  • For underneath choose from a camisole, oversized sweater, or buttoning your coat up all the way.
  • Over the knee boots and a faux fur/wool coat look great when paired together.
  • Not feeling the faux fur coat option? Try a faux fur vest.

Plaid coat and boots:

Just like a faux fur coat, the same tips can be applied for when styling a plaid coat. Coats are an outerwear piece that goes with just about any top, so don’t overthink it.

Sweater and scarf:

Black Spanx leggings with black pointed boots are such a sleek pairing that will give your legs an elongated look. Having an all-black outfit with a pop of color whether that’s with statement earrings, a fun pair of shoes or a printed coat is an easy way to do a lot of talking.

Conclusion

Bottom line is, are Spanx faux leather leggings worth all the hype and the money? For the fabric, legging price, and the endless outfit options they most definitely are. They fit perfectly, can be styled so many different ways, wear well, and stand the test of time. So if you wear leggings a lot, treat yo’self and get a fabulous pair of leggings.

Now if you are like me, probably not, since I truly do not style many looks with leggings. Lesson learned. As we continue to grow as bloggers, we are learning to not jump on every trend or do what every other person on Instagram is posting about – but that’s another blog post for another day.
